There are only four national championship playoff spots available but a dozen teams are still chasing those coveted slots as we head down the stretch in the 2021 NJCAA football season. 

The playoff picture will begin to come into better focus after this weekend.

The Matchups:


Mississippi Conference championship game

Northwest (8-2) vs Hinds (8-2) 2pm  Cst

Northwest won the 2020 conference championship and NJCAA national title and the Rangers own 10 conference titles in all.  The Rangers have won five straight coming into today's game.

The Hinds Eagles have secured 13 conference titles in their history with their last coming in 2000. The Eagles are winners of five straight games.

  • Northwest QB Michael Hiers has thrown 17 touchdowns and only one interception.
  • Hiers is averaging 235.3 YPG with a 72.1 completion %.
  • NWCC RB Jaquerrious Williams is rushing for 92.9 YPG to go with 14 touchdowns.
  • NWCC RB Jamarien Bracey is another weapon and is averaging 65.7 YPG.
  • NWCC LB Sam Brumfield (79 TT) , Kylan Robinson (65 TT), and DB Rontavious Person (62 TT) have proved effective.
  • Hinds RB Jeffrey Pittman is averaging 96.8 YPG.
  • Pittman is hot. He rushed for 82 yards and four touchdowns last week vs EMCC. He ran for 210 yards on 29 carries and three scores vs Pearl River and ran for 142 yards  and 3 touchdowns on 11 touches vs East Central.
  • Hinds QB BeSean McCray is a dual threat.  He threw for 199 yards on 19-24 passing last week vs EMCC and rushed for 47 yards.

Fourth seeded Blinn (5-4) @ first seeded New Mexico Military  (8-2) 3pm Cst

Players to Watch

  • NMMI RB Anthony Grant averages 116.1 YPG in 8 games which ranks him third nationally.
  • NMMI RB Diego Pavia compliments the rushing attack also  averaging 60.2 YPG.
  • NMMI K/P William Testa is a difference maker. Testa is 9-11 in FGA (82%) and Testa is 38-39 (97%) in point after attempts  on the season.
  • Blinn RB Joshua Berry is rushing for  104.6 YPG.
  • Blinn LB Nate Dyman leads the team with 60 total tackles.

Second-seeded Kilgore College (5-4) @ third-seeded Tyler (5-4)

Players to Watch

  • Kilgore QB Malcolm Mays is throwing for 258 YPG which ranks him third nationally.
  • Kilgore LB Keith Harris is second in the country with 101 total tackles.
  • Tyler QB General Booty is second in the nation  throwing for 264.9 YPG.
  • Tyler RB Azhaun Dingle is fifth nationally averaging 113.5 YPG.
  • Tyler LB Xavier Benson is third nationally with 96 total tackles.

Kansas playoff matchups Sunday November 13.

Butler (1-8) @ Garden City (6-2)

Players to Watch

  • GCCC QB Rhett Ricedorff is on fire. He threw for 351 yards on 15-28 passing to go with 4 touchdowns last week.
  • GCCC RB William Knight rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.
  • Butler QB Gavin Screws went 19-31 for 274 yards and threw for 4 touchdowns last week.
  • Butler RB Kevontae McDonald rushed 14 times for 10 yards and a score.
  • Butler WR AJ King hauled in 6 catches for 145 yards and a touchdown last week.

 Hutchinson (6-2) @ Independence (8-1)

Players to Watch

  • Hutch QB Dylan Laible went 11-15 for 365 yards and threw 7 touchdowns.
  • Hutch RB Anwar Lewis rushed for 86 yards and a score on 11 carries. He's ranks fourth nationally with 919 rushing yards in 8 games averaging 114.9 YPG.
  • Hutch WR Malik Benson ranks 2nd nationally averaging  91.4 YPG.
  • Indy QB Tyriq Starks threw for 270 yards and 3 touchdowns last week and rushed for 78 yards on 11 carries.
  • Indy RB Tytrayon Lewis rushed 4 times for 111 yards and a score.
  • Indy WR Willie Brantley had  5 catches for 78 yards.

 Winners advance to the conference championship game on Sunday November 21.
