POPLARVILLE, Miss. — One of the leaders on the Pearl River women's basketball team is headed to the next level.
Sophomore standout Gabby Brown (Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; Choctaw) has signed with East Tennessee State.
"I felt at home when I went on my visit," Brown said following Thursday's signing ceremony. "Coach (Scotty) Fletcher, Coach (Chelsee) Black and Coach (Caroline) Lumpkin really helped me along the way and my family and friends all supported me.
"I just love it there. It's like Pearl River but bigger."
Brown was an energizing presence on the Lady Wildcats during her two seasons at The River. In addition to winning 30 games in two years, Brown was integral in getting the program back into the MACJC and Region XXIII tournaments.
"We are very excited for Gabby and her family. Gabby has been a proven winner since stepping onto our campus two years ago," Pearl River coach Scotty Fletcher said. "She has been instrumental in our growth as a program and established herself as a leader on campus, in the community and on the court.
"ETSU is gaining a special young lady who is very selfless, driven, disciplined and focused with her tireless work ethic. She has never shied away from competition and will be a valuable asset to the great history and tradition Coach Brittney Ezell has built at East Tennessee State."
After averaging 6.0 points per game as a freshman with 3.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists, Brown stepped up her game as a sophomore, averaging 7.2 points with 4.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists. Eight times this season Brown scored double-digit points, hitting 20 points twice.
The 5-foot-8 guard also proved to be a difficult defender, collecting 37 steals over two seasons.
Following the season, Brown was selected to the MACJC All-Star Game. In the North-vs-South showcase, Brown made 3 of 4 shots from the floor and scored nine points with four rebounds and two assists.
Pearl River's basketball programs have several events planned for the summer.
The girls junior varsity and varsity shootout is set for June 13 and 20 with a $35 team entry fee per game. The boys shootout will be June 12 and 19.
The skills camp will be at 10 a.m. until noon on June 17-18. The camp is for children ages 6-18 with a cost of $25.
