WESSON, Miss. – The Lady Wolves moved to 1-1 in division play with a 52-43 defensive win over the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Lady Bulldogs. Co-Lin improved to 10-1 on the season, the lone loss came to Pearl River in the first semester, and drops the Lady Bulldogs to 5-4, 1-1. The Lady Wolves on the road Monday as the team travels to Decatur, Miss. to take on the East Central Community College Lady Warriors and are back in Mullen Gymnasium next Thursday, January 17 as Southwest makes the trip to Wesson.
"We wanted to apply pressure defensively early, but we let them get by us and get some easy drives. We were playing hard, just not very smart," said Co-Lin head coach Gwyn Young. "They had some big post players, but we got them in foul trouble and that helped us…we were a little out of control on offense, but we made enough plays to keep us in and we made some great hustle plays."
Both teams struggled to hit shots early on as the squads combined for 19 points. The Lady Bulldogs led early, 8-4, their largest of the game, but Co-Lin rallied back in the second half of the first quarter with a 7-0 run to take an 11-8 lead.
The second quarter was much like the first, very defensive. The Lady Wolves and Lady Bulldogs traded baskets and Co-Lin took a six-point, 26-20, lead into the locker room.
Co-Lin's offense came to life in the third quarter as the lead was quickly stretched to double-digits in the opening minutes of the second half. A three-pointer from freshman point guard Darien Tubby with and a quick layup off a turnover from Azaria Magee capped off the 20-point quarter and gave the Lady Wolves a 46-31 advantage with just 10 minutes to play.
The Lady Wolves' offensive sputtered in the fourth quarter as the team only scored six points, but Co-Lin controlled the boards and held the Lady Bulldogs to just 12 to hang on to the 52-43 victory.
Three Lady Wolves scored in triple digits with Camryn Davis leading the way with 12. Sha'Quandra added 11 points as she went 7-of-10 from the free throw stripe, while Darien Tubby scored 10. Tubby also led the Lady Wolves in rebounds with seven and in assists with three.
Breannah McCullah led the Lady Bulldogs with 10 points while Mia Goolsby and Nakendra Owens posted six rebounds each.
Co-Lin shot 33 percent (19-of-57) from the floor, 20 percent (3-of-15) from three-point range, and 61 percent (11-of-18) from the free throw line. The Lady Bulldogs shot 27 percent (15-of-55) from the floor, 15 percent (3-of-20) from downtown, and 63 percent (10-of-16) from the stripe. Gulf Coast outrebounded Co-Lin 42-41 but had three more turnovers.
