Season ends for No. 3 Jones Lady Bobcats

Season ends for No. 3 Jones Lady Bobcats

MAGEE – The 3rd-ranked Jones College Bobcats needed to win three games here Monday to continue postseason play.

They came up just a bit short.

The Lady Bobcats allowed six unearned runs in the first inning and went to drop a 7-4 decision to Copiah-Lincoln in the third-place game of the MACJC Tournament at the Magee Sportsplex.

Jones ends the season at 43-8. Earlier in the day, Jones had eliminated No. 14 East Central 8-3 and No. 12 Mississippi Gulf Coast, 7-4.

Co-Lin, 30-15, advances to the Region 23 Tournament at Pearl River, which will be played Wednesday through Friday.

Itawamba defeated Pearl River 8-0 in five innings in the title game, but ICC cannot host the region tournament because teams are not allowed to host the event two years in a row. LSU-Eunice will be the fourth team in the Region 23 Tournament field.

The tournament had to be moved to Magee after heavy rains made the field at Community Bank Park/Gwen Magee Field unplayable last week.

The Lady Bobcats could not completely recover from the first inning.

Co-Lin's Katelyn Hayman led off the first with a single and Callie Fortenberry reached on a fielder's choice. Marley Poole followed with a single and an error allowed Fortenberry to score and Poole to reach third base.

Amber Brinson, Hannah Walls and Julie Scheurmann reached on consecutive errors, which allowed a run to score and loaded the bases. After a pop out for the second out, Ky'Albri Washington singled a run home and Delaine McMillan followed with a two-run double. Hayman was hit by a pitch and Fortenberry ended the scoring with an RBI infield single.

Jones got on the board in the top of the third inning when Mollie Singleterry (Wayne County) led off with a double and LP Trammell (Germantown) followed with an RBI double.

McMillan answered with a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the third to make it 7-1.

Jones cut the lead to 7-2 in the sixth when Kayla Collins (East Central) and Rebekah DiLavore (Ocala, Florida) started the inning with singles. Gracie McCleskey (Caledonia) drew a one-out walk to load the bases. Singleterry grounded into a fielder's choice to score Collins, but a pop out ended the inning.

The Lady Bobcats made it interesting in the seventh.

Raven Blackwell (St. Patrick) led off with a double and McKennah Sikes (Van Buren, Arkansas) followed with her 17thhome run of the season over the rightfield fence to cut the lead to 7-4.

MGCCC cut the lead to 6-4 in the third.

Marsha' Hunt led off with an infield single, advanced to second on an error and scored on a single by Kayla Cade. Shelby Archer then hit a two-run home run to left.
