MS Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs end season at Magee

MAGEE — Mississippi Gulf Coast's season came to a sooner-than-hoped for end Monday, when the Lady Bulldogs lost their first two games on the final day of the MACJC Softball Tournament.

No. 12 Gulf Coast lost 4-0 to No. 10 Itawamba in the semifinals, then fell to No. 3 Jones 7-4 in the losers' bracket.

"I told them after the game that it seemed like nothing really fit for us today," Gulf Coast coach Kenneth Long said. "It was one of those situations where you hope something works out good, and it seemed like all the breaks went against us and we didn't make any breaks for ourselves. It wasn't our day."

The Lady Bulldogs managed only three hits against Itawamba in the first game at the Magee Sports Complex, where the tournament was moved from Ellisville after torrential rains last week.

Jones hit two home runs in the first inning of the second game, including a grand slam and aided by three walks, to take a 6-0 lead.

Briana Shores (Fr., Richland/Richland) had an RBI single in the second to get the Lady Bulldogs on the board, then got a two-out RBI single by Kayla Cade (Fr., Harrison Central/Saucier) and a two-run homer from Shelby Archer (Fr., Pearl River Central/Picayune) to make it 6-4 game in the top of the third.

Jones pushed a run across in the bottom of the third, but Gulf Coast got the first two batters on in the fourth. A baserunning mistake turned into a double play, and the Lady Bulldogs could score.

A two-on, one-out situation was squandered in the fifth because of another mistake on the basepaths, and Gulf Coast would get no closer.

The Lady Bulldogs finish the season 31-14 after a third-place finish in the MACJC regular season.

"This team did something great for our school, out coaching staff and our program," Long said. "The beginning of the year we were not ranked at all. Most of the season we were in the top 10 or 15. I think that's a complement to our team."
