Itawamba defeats Lady Bears in MACJC tourney opener

The MACJC state tournament got off to a rocky start for the Lady Bears Wednesday afternoon as they were defeated by the 10th-ranked Itawamba Lady Indians 9-1. The game ended after five innings.

The Lady Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Josey Nations reached base on a one-out triple to right field and scored when Jordan McNabb reached on an error.

The lead was short-lived for the Lady Bears as Itawamba (34-12-1) used two doubles, a single and ground out to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first.

Itawamba went on to add one run in the second inning, one in the third and five in the fifth to close out the game.

Jade Latham took the loss in the circle, allowing eight runs on eight hits and a walk in 4 innings of work. She struck out one batter.

Carrington Jefcoat had a single in the game.

The Lady Bears continue play in the tournament on Thursday when they face Co-Lin in a loser's bracket contest. Due to the threat of inclement weather, game time has been set for 10:00.
