The Meridian Community College Eagles battled throughout the night but couldn't pull out the win Monday. The Eagles fell to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College 61-51.
The Eagles has a back and forth first half. The Eagles jumped out to an early 12-10 lead courtesy of an Iverson Smith three-pointer. Smith would hit three free throws to extend the lead to 21-17 which would match the biggest lead of the first half. The Eagles would take the lead into the break 27-25.
Unfortunately the second half did not start out well for the Eagles. The Bulldogs came out firing on all cylinders to start the second half. The Eagles struggled to score and the Bulldogs built a double digit lead midway through the half. The Eagles responded with a late run in the second half. The Eagles were able to cut it to 49-46 with 1:55 left but the Bulldogs were able to get a basket to stretch the lead back to five point. The Eagles would respond with five straight point including a huge three from Smith to tie it at 51-51 with 10 seconds left. Neither team was able to score again in regulation taking the game into overtime.
The Eagles struggled to score in overtime. The Bulldogs raced out to a 61-51 lead. The Eagles continued to struggle and were unable to score in the overtime period.
With the loss the Eagles fall to 7-12 on the season. The Eagles will be back in action Thursday, February 14 against East Central Community College. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 in Graham Gymnasium on the campus of Meridian Community College
