The Meridian Community College Eagles jumped out to an early lead but were unable to hold on at home Thursday night. The Eagles were ahead for much of the night but lost the lead down the stretch and fell to Copiah-Lincoln Community College 68-63.
The Eagles raced out to an early 13-6 lead behind a strong offensive performance from Brandon Mills. Mills was able to work in the paint and get a couple of quick layups to help the Eagles build the six point lead. The visiting Wolves responded with a 7-0 run to tie things at 13. From that point forward the Eagles would not trail again in the half. Behind a couple of big shots from Iverson Smith the Eagles extended their lead to as much as ten and took it into the half leading 34-27.
The second half was not kind to the Eagles as the Wolves cut into the MCC lead early in the half. The Wolves cut it to a two point game with 5:00 left and eventually took the lead late in the half. The Eagles trailed by two with under a minute left but were unable to bring the score any closer. The Wolves were able to put the game away with a couple of late free throws.
With the loss the Eagles fall to 7-7 on the season. The Eagles will be back in action Monday, January 28 as they host Pearl River Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Graham Gymnasium.
