GULFPORT — No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast was edged by one shot by John A. Logan College Tuesday in the final round of the MGCCC Fall Invitational at Windance, but the Bulldogs' Jon Hopkins won medalist honors with a playoff birdie.
The two teams trailed Rend Lake by a shot after the opening round, and Logan shot 12-over 300 in the final round to beat the Bulldogs by one shot.
"It hurts to lose by a shot, but this is a humbling game," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "Sometimes it just doesn't go your way."
The Bulldogs did win its third straight MACJC event, which was held as a tournament-inside-a-tournament. Meridian lost by a stroke on that scoreboard, with MGCCC's B team finished fourth.
"The best part about it is the B team finished fourth behind three really good teams," Snell said. "That bodes well for next year. I take a lot of promising things out of it."
Hopkins (Fr., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishops Stortford, England) and Meridian's Mitchell Fifer tied at 2-under 142 atop the individual standings. They each made par on No. 10 to open the playoff, but Hopkins hit driver on No. 11 and had 94 yards left to the pin and Fifer's 2-iron left him with a sidehill lie on a mound on the right side of the fairway.
Hopkins hit his 56-degree wedge to 8 feet and buried his putt for the win.
"There was pressure for me to hole it because I didn't want to go on any further," he said. "I knew if I missed, I wasn't going to miss by much. It was always going to be a two-putt."
Brice Wilkinson (So., Madison Central/Madison) finished 1-over to earn All-Tournament Team honors along with Hopkins. Carter Nicholson (So., Pearl River Central/Carriere) tied for seventh at 3-over.
Gulf Coast plays its last tournament of the fall on Nov. 5-6 when it travels to play in the Central Alabama Community College Invitational in Alexander City, Ala.
