No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast narrowly reversed a first-round deficit Sunday, edging Meridian by a shot to win the first MACJC event of the season at Raymond.
"We came back and played well today," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "We played well as a team. We had three people make the All-Tournament team, which is a testament to their staying power. They just grind it out."
The Bulldogs' Brice Wilkinson (So., Madison Central/Madison), Jake Crosson (Fr., New Hope/Columbus) and Graham Evans (So., Presbyterian Christian/Wiggins) tied for second at 3-over, four behind Meridian's Mitchell Fifer.
Jon Hopkins (Fr., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishops Stortford, England) was sixth two more shots back at Eagle Ridge Golf Club.
MGCCC had eight golfers finish in the top 18. Patrick Powers (Fr., St. Stanislaus/Gulfport) tied for seventh at 6-over, Miles Jackson tied for 10th at 7-over, and Nathan Woolard (Fr., Poplar Bluff/Poplar Bluff, Mo.) and Carter Nicholson (So., Pearl River Central/Carriere) tied for 12th another shot back.
Gulf Coast edged Meridian by one shot in May to win the NJCAA Division II championship. The Bulldogs have won their first two tournaments of the season.
The next MACJC event is Oct. 1-2 at Ackia Golf Club in Amory.
