No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast had a great first day of the new golf season Monday, with the Bulldogs tied for the lead after 36 holes at the Wallace State Fall Invitational in Cullman, Ala.
"We played really well," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "We played decent the first round, and then came back with a 13-under in the second round. That's really good."
MGCCC, led by Cameron Mobley (Fr., Northwest Rankin/Brandon) who shot 65 in the second round and is 7-under, is tied with Central Alabama at 16-under. Mobley started the second round on the back nine.
"He bogeyed 15 to go to minus-2, then from there just birdied every other hole and climbed his way to 7-under," Snell said. "He putted well."
Jon Hopkins (Fr., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishops Stortford, England) is at 4-under, and Miles Jackson (So., Biloxi/Biloxi) is another shot back.
Two of the Bulldogs most experienced players, Brice Wilkinson (So., Madison Central/Madison) and Carter Nicholson (So., Pearl River Central/Carriere), didn't have stellar days. They're 1-over and 3-over, although Wilkinson holed out a wedge on No. 2 for an eagle and Jackson eagled the last hole.
"It was a team effort," Snell said. "It just shows the depth of our team."
The final round of the 54-hole event at the Cross Creek Golf Course will be played Tuesday.
Cameron Mobley 72-65—137
Jon Hopkins 68-72—140
Miles Jackson 72-69—141
Brice Wilkinson 76-69—145
Carter Nicholson 73-74—147
