MGCCC is tied for 2nd at national tourney

FOLEY, Ala. — No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast saw a promising start fade on the second nine at the NJCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship, but every other team faced the same challenge on a demanding back at GlenLakes Golf Club.

"The old cliché is you can lose it on the first day, but you can't win it," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "We didn't lose it on the first day. We hung in there. We'll be right in the hunt."

Gulf Coast is tied for second at 3-over, two shots behind Tyler. Parkland is also at 3-over, with Meridian and Kirkwood tied for fourth at 6-over.

The 72-hole tournament continues Tuesday with the second round. Gulf Coast will tee off starting at 11:36 p.m., again paired with Kirkwood and Mott.

The Bulldogs, who were runners-up at last year's championship in Mesa, Ariz., got a balanced performance from the team.

Jackson Wedgeworth (So., West Jones/Soso) shot even-par 72 and is in 10th place, and three golfers scored 73s to tie for 16th place: Brice Wilkinson (Fr. Madison Central/Madison), Colby Blake (So., Parklane/Tylertown) and Colby Entriken (So., Hancock/Pass Christian).

"We played well," Snell said. "We stumbled right there in the middle of the second nine. Jackson made a couple doubles and Colby Entriken made a double bogey. Jackson really grinded his way out. He was struggling right there, but he didn't let it bother him and kept it intact."

Carter Nicholson (Fr., Pearl River Central/Carriere) tied for the fifth-most pars on the day with 13 but didn't putt great and finished with a 77.

Southeast's Kean Kontor leads the field at 2-under, with eight golfers tied at 1-under. There are 32 golfers within three shots of the lead.

MGCCC tees off at 11:36 in the second round Tuesday. The tournament concludes Thursday.
