The award winning Netflix series, Last Chance U, directed by Greg Whitely, has announced that the upcoming season 5 will be it's final season to feature JUCO football.

For the first 2 seasons, the hit documentary series followed the 2015 and 2016 seasons of the East Mississippi Community College Lions, led by head coach Buddy Stephens.  In the past 8 seasons, Stephens has won a remarkable 5 NJCAA National Championships.

Despite the tremendous exposure brought to JUCO football, the series has warranted some controversy and criticism from academic leaders and league officials.  Dr. Christopher Parker, President and C.E.O. of the NJCAA said, "Last Chance U presents the institutions it profiles as poorly run, poorly funded and located in communities that consider football their saving grace. But for many athletes, two-year programs are not the last chance. Athletics are part of the college experience at many two-year institutions, but the academics are obviously what help students reach their goals of attending four-year colleges." Nevertheless, without a doubt,  Last Chance U has put JUCO football on the map and introduced us to some captivating characters.

Season 5, Last Chance U: Laney, follows Laney College JUCO football in Oakland, CA and premiers July 28, 2020.  See trailer here:  Last Chance U: Season 5

According to producer/director Greg Whitely, a Last Chance U spin-off is planned for 2021 that will follow JUCO Basketball.
