PERKINSTON — The Mississippi Gulf Coast Cheer team and Perkettes dance team will compete in the UCA & UDA College Cheerleading & Dance Team National Championships this weekend in Orlando, Fla.
It will take place at the Walt Disney World Resort, and ESPN will show highlights on their networks at a later date. There will be live streams available at https://tv.varsity.com/live/6101-2019-uca-uda-college-cheerleading-dance-team-national-championship/signup with a subscription charge.
The teams will have a departure performance Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Weathers-Wentzell Center before heading Florida early Thursday.
Coach Karlee Nobles' Cheer team will be making their third appearance in the event, having finished sixth last year. Gulf Coast will be competing in the Small Coed Division II semifinals on Saturday at 8:20 a.m. CT. Twelve teams will compete, with six advancing to the finals at 2:30 p.m.
"I'm expecting them to do an awesome job. We've had to push through some injuries the past two weeks, but they've worked hard to overcome it. We're way more prepared than last year with more elite skills."
Holmes, a fellow MACJC school, is the only other community college in the category.
Coach Britney Kuehn's Perkettes are making their first appearance, and they'll be in the Open Jazz semifinals at 8:18 a.m. There are 32 teams in the category, and the finals will take place Sunday with the top 16 teams taking part.
"We're really excited to be going down there," Kuehn said. "There's only one other junior college in our division, but we really want to go down there and blow their socks off."
The other community college in the category is Orange Coast College in the Los Angeles area.
